  1. The few laps on slicks in the wettening track were lovely. Otherwise, rest of the race was processional.

Ferrari, if they pitted in the right window, could have had 3rd-4th atleast. How they stayed out soo long and on hard tyres on top of that, I dont understand.

    1. I wonder if Ferrari were banking on a red flag there. If it had been thrown due to rain, they would have taken the restart 1-2. It was a pretty big gamble if so!

      1. I think they were hoping the rain would hit a tad less than it did. Both Hamilton and Verstappen mentioned that the most of the lap before pitting had been fine, just that last bit was bad. Had the rain hit slightly less, it might have been possible to stay out on the slicks.

As a Ferrari fan, don’t think it would have been 1-2… Maybe 1-3 or 2-3… I think Lando or even Russell would have caught up

  2. Decent early on & with the SCs + rain, but straightforward in between.

  3. A pretty amazing opening race! Antonelli the stand out for me. Incredibly tough conditions but kept his nose clean and worked his way forward. A very mature drive, especially when you consider where all the other rookies ended up. I really don’t like seeing the cars sharing the track with tracks and marshals, especially given how many spins we saw on the formation laps and under safety car. It should be a red flag every time in these conditions. We lose far too many racing laps too. Gutted for Oscar. Gave it a 9.

  4. The most surprising thing of the GP is that Stroll was not in the lowlights; the opposite, he did well.

Obviously, great race with several fights. That McLaren is on a league of it own. What a car. Kudos to them

    1. 3. Seriously, nothing happened for 99 % of that race, you can’t race these cars properly in the wet, and the two laps of chaos didn’t make up for that.

Plus points. 1) Kimi looks like a star. OK he was out of position so he had a faster car but he was literally the only driver able to overtake without the driver in front making a mistake.

      2) If the Red Bull is somewhere near the Mclaren on pace, Max can compete. How he kept up with the two Mclarens in the first part of the race was very impressive, the car is clearly very difficult to drive.

      1. Yes, verstappen just makes no mistakes, he could’ve continued on the dry till the end, they just stopped him cause he’d lose too much time compared to the inters runners.

        1. Verstappen is just a step ahead of his generation’s peers. If it wasn’t for Hamilton still being around, it would be much like the late 1990s where nobody was close to Schumacher.

That Norris still barely won is quite telling.

          1. He finished the race on intermediates, and it was a short stint.

There is running away with it after 30 laps and craptastic safety car almost finishes like today.
I think in the dry Lando wins by over 30 seconds. All Lando had to do was control the pace of the race and he did enough to keep everyone behind and making bigger mistakes.

      2. On point 2): in a less than equal car, VER might even benefit from NOR-PIA as apparently they will race closer and lose some pace on that.

    2. On other hand, alonso crashed out both in brazil and here, he used to be a good wet weather driver, but probably age isn’t doing any favour.

      1. @esploratore1 was he though? i don’t remember Alonso ever being known for wet weather driving in particular. Fuji 07 comes to mind. Also wasn’t involved with the fight for the lead in china 07. not saying he never did well in the rain, but i don’t think it was ever considered a particular strength of his like with Senna, Schumacher, hamilton or verstappen

        1. Germany ’07 was probably his best wet weather drive, though Hungary ’06 was also a highlight (on course to win from 15th until a driveshaft failure put him out). Both races were rather a long time ago, however.

  5. 8/10

Some magnificent driving there from all, but especially Lando and Kimi. Loses points because the mid part of the race was a bit dull and half of the next portion was behind the safety car (but bonus points for not red flagging). Good battles, good entertainment and a bit of jeopardy

  6. One of the duller wet races in terms of wheel to wheel action but not terrible. 6/10

  7. I think it’s time to get new commentators. Crofty was so awful this race.

When he said Ferrari have done a masterclass in strategy, when they had yet to pit for inters on a SOAKED track whilst everyone else had was hilarious, and then to double down stating they should’ve stayed it out when it was so obviously not going to work….

Other than that fun race I guess, 7/10

    1. Brundle was not having that. It was so awkward.

    2. Crofty awful this race??.. you are too kind, when hasn’t he been awful? Similar to Ted kravitz.

I wonder how they manage to keep their jobs…

      1. I don’t mind Ted, but I cannot handle Crofty. It’s the first race of the year and he’s already making me want to watch on mute.

        1. I don’t mind getting a little excited near the end of the race, but Crofty is definitely getting more excited than me. Thats probably my only gripe. I just wish he would simmer that down a little cause it sounds terrible some times.

    3. Red Bull narrowly avoiding disaster by pitting Verstappen just in time.
Don’t understand why Lawson was still on slicks when he crashed out though.

    4. @smartez Thats why I jump through a few hoops with a VPN etc… to watch via F1TV as the commentators are better. They make fewer mistakes, Are far more insightful & actually call the action rather than going off on rants & trying to be the story & push certain narratives as Croft & others on Sky do.

You go back a decade or so & i was defending Croft when some would criticise him but he & the whole Sky coverage just got unbearable for me so I initially just started skipping all the Pre/post race nonsense they would spit out & then just switched over to F1TV completely as soon as they started producing there own commentary on the F1 Live option.

    5. Agree a good few things were off from him including one of the restarts he didn’t even know lando had already gone. Also overly hyping moments that were not that noteworthy.
As a commentator I don’t think he does a great job but TBF I don’t think brundle is as good as he used to be either.
With croft it feels he actually talks a bit too much on certain things and doesn’t usually let brindle talk much.

Would love to have Karun in the box as a third person if it means he takes some of crofts talking time.

If not then Karun ant and brundle would be a great team.

My favourite has to be the James Allen and brundle pairing and then the NBC indycar team. Thankfully they retained most of that team with the switch to fix

James Allen was good at telling a story and was pretty smooth

  8. Pretty good. Even when McLaren were running away there was a battle for the lead brewing. Lots of strategic tension around the weather. Some critical errors from top drivers and great performances in challenging conditions.

  9. 5.

Ferrari did look poor, be it dry or wet. I guess no rain set-up, just speculation or an excuse of them for the poor showing in Quali. The driver’s conversations with their racing engineers seemed tense during the race. Not a happy place at the moment for sure. Worrying. Should have pitted together with Norris, high chances to finish 3rd and 4th. My only hope is that this is their worst race of the season.

    1. So the 5 is for Ferrari, agreed.

      1. You must be watching F1 for the crashes, unforced errors, SC periods, red flags etc. Me, not really.

  10. Cannot believe some of the comments here – “boring”?? That was the most tension, other then a couple laps, we’ve seen in years!

  11. A disappointing race. 6/10.

  12. It as a lottery at the end but a race where most drivers were being cautious.

  13. Too many safety cars to call it a good race.

Seeing so many drivers go off is also a bad look for F1. This is supposed to be the best of the best.

F1 might as well not bother with the wet anymore.

  14. One of the worst wet races I’ve ever seen in the last 30 years! 3/10
Those cars have so become utterly terrible at overtaking that even the rain can’t help them?!?

On a side note, I was very disappointed to hear Martin Brundle and Crofty being totally clueless as to why the “Fastest race lap” award was ditched. They said “If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it”. SMH.

  15. 9/10
There was a fight for the lead throughout the different phases of the race. The weather conditions made it very tricky for rookies and experienced drivers both. A splendid opening race of the season.

    1. Exactly! Voted 10/10 myself.

  16. Too many laps behind the safety car so I voted 7. I refuse to believe there isn’t a better solution to recover cars much quicker that could be deployed. Losing 5+ laps everytime a car goes out is stupid. Time to start making recovery of cars a deciding factor in circuit selection, maybe then the circuits will invest in ensuring quicker recovery of vehicles.

    1. There should be more cranes, like Monaco, for round one. Then we can see what’s underneath the new cars.

    2. It’s extremely hard to argue against safety, but the unfortunate result is that much of motorsport is now so risk averse that it’s almost impossible to get a proper race going. All the neutralisations, safety cars, even restarts and interruptions make it a real gamble to watch live. It also ruins much of the strategic part of these longer races.

I’ve all but stopped watching endurance racing because it’s a real bummer to get invested for two hours and then have some amateur GT driver cause a 15 minute long safety car that resets all the strategies. At least in F1 all the cars are still somewhat in the same race.

      1. Has any safety feature ever been rolled back as being too much of an exaggeration besides ABS and TC?

Soon we’ll be racing by remote control at this rate. No live spectators either.

  17. A 6 or a 7. Cars, too twitchy. Safety car, too long. Maybe I’d have been more generous if I hadn’t awakened in the middle of the night.

F1 and its endless disruptions are getting too much to stomach, it’s like the opposite of the 60s when they would race over a car on fire.

  18. Went with an 8, really entertaining race with some good action and whilst the laps behind the safety car felt a bit unnecessary, at the same time, races in the past where like that?

If McLaren go on to win more than half the races this year, I will not complain, they deserve it after there recent years of struggles before mid 2023, their car looks like its a rocketship for this season.

The rookies all had weekends to forget with the exception of Antonelli, really impressive drive, that kid seems special, early days but Russell might have his hands full already once Antonelli sorts his qualy pace out.

Ferrari, I don’t quite understand why they changed there car concept from a pull rod to push rod for this year? (correct me if I’m wrong) they’ve probably gone backwards and its somewhat depressing. I just hope they can sort there car out soon enough before focusing on 2026 because to me it looks like a midfielder right now. Leclercs radio about the leakage was funny though ‘Must be the… water’ ‘Let’s add these to the words of wisdom’.

  19. I’ll go with a 6/10 as while tt wasn’t a bad race and had some exciting moments & uncertainty created by the changing conditions I don’t think it was anything too special overall.

And despite the constant hyping up during the build-up & over the weekend regarding how close/competitive the field is in terms of lap time & how Max was able to run with the McLarens at the Beginning/End of the race shows we are in for an exciting season i’m actually not so sure they should start celebrating that yet.

Yes it’s true in practice/qualifying the lap times were veyy close & it is true that Max’s good start got him amongst the McLarens & the late rain & subsequent SC allowed him to be close at the end. However the field been close in terms of lap times doesn’t often equate to producing amazing racing as that not only doesn’t usually carry over to the GP but it can also make overtaking harder if the performance variables between the cars isn’t big enough.

And in terms of the fight for the win I think it’s pretty obvious that McLaren have a few tenths on the Red Bull which is then a bit ahead of the rest. Yeah Max got to 2nd on the start & stayed there but how much of that was Max having that pace & how much was it Lando backing him into Piastri a bit to try & allow Piastri to have a got at getting back to 2nd because as soon as Piastri got passed Max the McLaren’s ran away & had built a 17-ish second gap to max before the SC when Fernando crashed & Max also had a stead gap to George & the group behind him.

We’ll see how the next few races play out but based on today rather than been as optimistic as F1 seems to be as far as this is going to be super close in terms of been a title fight between multiple teams I think it’s going to be a fight just between the McLarens with Red Bull in the hands of Max been best of the rest.

  20. I quite liked it, better than most of what we had in 2024. And always prefer a season opener at Aus rather than a race at Bahrain immediately after testing at the same track. Would’ve preferred less laps under the safety car, but can understand why it took so long to recover the cars being a street track and all.

  21. It was an example of how rain doesn’t make every race interesting.
15 overtakes, against 3 safety cars and multiple pit stops…
Not enough for so early watching this show.

  22. The thing that had me yelling was when the cars that were told to unlap pitted. Surely there is a rule that covers that. ?

  23. not a great race, not that good even.

I honestly think the heavier cars don’t make for great watching. And the tires, they really are more of an enemy than the other drivers. Which in itself takes away from the competition on the track and makes it more about who has the better car.

5/10, not horrible, but I think a dry race would have been more interesting to watch.
