Cassidy wins delayed London finale from pole to seal teams’ title for Envision

Nick Cassidy won the Formula E season finale in London to secure the teams championship for his Envision team.

Cassidy converted pole and led all 38 laps in a wet race that was heavily delayed, beating Evans over the line by just under five seconds with Jake Dennis finishing on the podium in third. The result sealed the teams’ championship for Envision by 12 points over Jaguar.

After Andretti’s Jake Dennis sealed the drivers’ championship in Saturday’s first race, the final round of the season would determine the teams champion. Nick Cassidy secured pole position ahead of Mitch Evans, giving Envision a three-point advantage heading into the last race of the year.

Rain left the outer sections of the London track soaking wet, with the inside areas naturally dry. The race began behind the Safety Car to allow drivers to assess conditions, with an initial attempt at a standing start abandoned by race director Scot Elkins. Eventually, the race was red flagged while under the Safety Car to try and allow marshals to try and clear some of the water. A second attempt was also abandoned due to concerns over visibility.

Eventually, after a 90-minute delay, the race finally got underway with a rolling start at the beginning of what was officially lap eight, with Cassidy leading from Evans and Norman Nato with Dennis in fourth, Stoffel Vandoorne fifth and Sebastian Buemi sixth ahead of Sam Bird. The wet conditions proved extremely challenging, but drivers managed to keep their cars out of the barriers.

Evans took his first Attack Mode on lap nine, as did Nato in third. Leader Cassidy and Dennis decided to take their first Attack Mode periods on the following lap, with Dennis opting for six minutes, while Cassidy took two. Nato dropped behind Dennis to fourth before taking his second six minute Attack Mode on the following lap.

Cassidy took the rest of his Attack Mode and grew his lead over Evans who used his final period to pull over seven seconds clear of Dennis. Back in the pack, Jean-Eric Vergne fell to the back to the field after pitting with an apparent problem with his DS Penske.

The field were unusually spread out in the wet conditions, with the two leaders only pulling further ahead of the pack. Envisions chances of securing the teams’ championship were boosted when Buemi passed Bird’s Jaguar for sixth place into the first corner, however, out front, Evans set a new fastest lap of the race to get within two seconds of the leader as the pair began catching lapped traffic.

Due to so many laps behind the Safety Car at the start of the race, four added laps were tacked onto the 34 lap race distance. Cassidy remained out of reach of Evans, with the leader extending his advantage over the Jaguar to over four seconds. At the end of lap 38, Cassidy crossed the line to seal the teams’ title for Envision with Evans coming home in second after being unable to put any pressure on his rival throughout the race.

Champion Dennis claimed the final podium position in third to extend his own record of most podiums in a season to 11. Nato held onto fourth ahead of Vandoorne, Buemi and Bird in seventh in his final race for Jaguar. Nico Muller finished eighth with Dan Ticktum taking points for Nio in ninth ahead of Pascal Wehrlein who completed the points in tenth.
